We Want Green Too: Highlights

In the News: Community Voices & Media Features

We Want Green, Too! has been empowering Veterans and revitalizing communities since 2007. It began with an energy-efficient home renovation for four Veterans in Jackson, MI, inspiring a return to Detroit’s East Side where they transformed a blighted home using green materials and recycled resources. That effort became a model for sustainable, community-built housing—and sparked a larger vision.

Since then, our work has expanded to include veteran support, youth mentorship, crisis response, and voter outreach. Through partnerships with local organizations and as a member of the Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition, we continue to tackle issues like energy justice, unemployment, and disinvestment. Upcoming projects include the Motor Pool community center and a new youth-led outreach program focused on education and organizing.

“Believe in your work, and have a laser-like focus on what it is that will be of service to your community for at least seven generations.” – We Want Green, Too!

We Want Green Too- Calvin Gaston.avif

Highlights: Calvin Gatson

Calvin is a skilled community worker that we are training and mentoring in tradework and maintenance. We support him in career visioning and confidence-building, and challenge him to seek higher potentialities within himself.

Calvin is the perfect example of the importance of authentic community building efforts, and the results we yield when building love in community with our young constituents who will be the leadership of tomorrow.

With grant funds provided through We Want Green Too’s membership in the Community Energy Engagement Network (CEEN) Calvin attended the Mid-American Regulatory Conference (MARC) in Indianapolis, Indiana alongside We Want Green Too staff. While there, he was able to participate in energy efficiency sessions with commissioners and company executives across thirteen states.
