How It Started

The Story Behind The Movement

The Healthy Homes Production Program (HHP) is part of HUD’s overall Healthy Homes Initiative launched in 1999. The program takes a comprehensive approach to addressing multiple childhood diseases and injuries in the home by focusing on housing-related hazards in

a coordinated fashion, rather than addressing a single hazard at a time.

The program builds upon Page 4 of 63 HUD’s successful Lead Hazard Control programs to expand the Department’s efforts to address a variety of high-priority environmental health and safety

hazards (NOFO FR-6800-N-44).

Healthy Homes Production Program in East Detroit

We Want Green Too is proud to bring HUD’s Healthy Homes Production Program (HHP) to East Detroit (48214), as part of the national Healthy Homes Initiative launched in 1999. This program takes a comprehensive approach to protecting families from multiple home-based health hazards, especially focusing on vulnerable groups such as children, seniors, and people with disabilities.

Unlike programs that address single issues, HHP targets a wide range of environmental health and safety hazards inside homes such as lead exposure, mold, poor air quality, and structural risks. Through lead assessments, abatement services, and hazard remediation, our team works directly with low-income homeowners and renters to identify and eliminate these risks, making homes safer and healthier.

Where We’re At: Healthy Homes Services Are Underway

After careful planning and preparation, We Want Green Too is now actively offering free home assessments for qualified residents in East Detroit and Highland Park. We are excited to begin this vital work to create safer, healthier homes for families in our community.

There’s no deadline to apply, applications are accepted year-round. Once residents submit the interest form, one of our program representatives will contact them to review their eligibility, discuss available services, and walk them through the next steps.
